Throughout history, Indian art has been awe-inspiring. Despite being ruled by many different cultures and being under constant attack from foreign rulers, Indian art has undergone an amazing transformation.

It’s no longer enough that Indian art follows the global market’s pace and trends; it also has its own distinct style.

Modern Indian artists deserve all the credit for breaking Indian art free of traditional and colonial conventions.

Modern Indian painters represented a new breed of artists who were not scared to experiment and innovate in their artworks to bring out something new – something that hadn’t ever been seen in Indian art before.

It’s difficult to comprehend how long it took for modern art forms to evolve and alter.

When we think of Indian art, we think of traditional and folk art. The renaissance of Indian art has come to an end, however, with the introduction of modern art to the country.

Modern Indian Art: The Modern Art Movement in India

Think about the early 1800s in India. British rule over the colonies is in full effect. The British were a wise lot.

They knew that it was important to understand Indian culture if they wanted to get along with the native people.

As a result, art schools and universities were established in India’s most populous cities.

In order to raise the next generation of Indian artists to the same academic standards as their British counterparts, the beautiful Western painting style had to be introduced to India.

For almost 30 years, this was the norm. But around the 19th century, modern art started to have an effect, and artists started to realise that their thoughts and imaginations were being manipulated.

The modern art movement started with the idea of rejecting the conventional and figurative style of painting that was prevalent in the European and American nations at that time.

In fact, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution that originated in France and later spread throughout Europe and American colonies, the foundation for the modern art movement was laid.

Indian art was always put down by the colonial government, but Raja Ravi Varma, the father of modern Indian art, came along in 1863 and gave people a reason to hope.

Though he came from a well-off family and used western methods, Varma had a strong affinity for Indian culture despite his upbringing.

Almost every one of his pieces dealt with other people’s cultures and lifestyles. Varma was a big hit because it resembled Indian women in its design.

When his paintings were first displayed and sold at an art convention in Vienna in the 1870s, he became well-known all over the world for the first time in his career.

An Indian artist had never before received such an honour anywhere else in the world.

But if you think that modern Indian painters haven’t had much of an effect on the art scene in this country, you’re wrong.

Many well-known Indian artists’ works can be found in modern painting galleries in India.

There is no doubt that the establishment of the Bengal School of Art has been a significant event in the development of the art world.

The Bengal School of Art co-founder didn’t appreciate Varma’s Western-influenced approaches. Varma, on the other hand, was the first artist to begin making paintings for individuals who were less fortunate.

Until recently, art was a luxury item reserved for the well-to-do. Everything changed when Varma started painting.

On the other hand, the Bengal school of art, on the other hand, was also chained with the feeling of nationalism and hence all Indian paintings and art pieces developed under it reflected a sense of Indian art and patriotism. Again, this was unacceptable to Indian artists of the modern era.

In 1948, just after India gained independence, the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group was formed.

People think that when this group came together, it was a big step forward for Indian art.

In order for Indian art to stand out, a new style must be developed. Attention to Indian art should be brought around the world.

Some of the most famous modern Indian painters, like M.F. Husain, V.S. Gaitonde, S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, etc., were among the first people to join this group.

It was subsequently that Tyeb Mehta and Ram Kumar joined this group.

Many paintings by this one art group have sold for more than a million dollars each in India.

It would be right to say that these talented and prodigious modern Indian artists, through their impeccable thought processes and spirited determination, have lighted the dim lamp for art in India.

Souza moved to Paris, Raza moved to Europe, and a few more of these artists began to participate in art shows and conventions in other nations.

Some of the survivors, like Mehta, Gaitonde, and Husain, continued to shine around the world with their new ideas and sharp skills.

These Indian artists have brought some of the world’s most prestigious art brands to India, including Christie’s and Sotheby’s.

In addition to Amrita Sher-Gil, there are a number of other notable artists from modern Indian art scene. She was born in Hungary but later moved to India with her family.

We can’t talk about modern art in India without including Amrita Sher and her paintings.

As a young woman, she was regarded as one of India’s most important and talented female artists.

As a way to improve the treatment of women in India, Amrita was always searching for the emptiness in the faces of women who had been harmed.

VS Gaitonde is my favourite Indian contemporary painter since his works are outstanding instances of abstract art. In order to express himself, Gaitonde, a man of few words, always looked for the most vivid and random patterns.
